Introducing Charmian Devi
Charmian Devi was the lead singer/songwriter of a cutting edge Canadian punk band based in Vancouver. They toured relentlessly on the North West circuit through Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver and across Canada.
The end of her first band sadly coincided with the tragic death of Charmian's husband. It was at this dark and harrowing time that she relocated to London UK for two years to rebuild her life. Charmian performed with a new band in London clubs.
She later returned to Canada and then emerged once again, after a period of reflection, as a songwriter and musician stronger and more powerful than ever before.
She began recording new songs in Canada, and then moved to New York where she recorded the majority of the songs that make up her sublime forthcoming album Diamond Hour.
Charmian Devi on her life
“I’m a singer/writer originally from Montreal, Canada. I was born in Montreal, but raised in Québec City. I grew up in the Québécois French culture amid deep snow, loud bars and unusual characters. My musical roots began with an eccentric, well-educated British father who would come home with the latest British and American music albums, as well as American folk song recordings. I was hooked to music from these early days and vowed to write lyrics from the age of eight, scribbling bits of poetry to my best friend. Once I committed to a life in the arts, I never looked back and have stumbled through many a sordid tale to arrive at this point. I am a writer and singer to the core and cannot seem to stop. Music drives me, heals me and keeps me alive. After spending time in Vancouver, then Montreal, New York, and London, I now live in Brighton, UK.” – Charmian Devi
Charmian Devi on 'Diamond Hour' (the track)
“Diamond Hour is a vibrant track that reflects on the growing violence and chaos of modern times, and speaks of the need to rise above, speak out and transform the heightened oppressive authoritarian world we live in, to work for freedom, not false ideologies, to get free and stay free.” – Charmian Devi
Tony Garnier and Marc Urselli on Charmian Devi
“Her songs are raw, intuitive and in tune with the times.” – Tony Garnier, musician & producer
“I’ve really enjoyed producing Charmian. There are fewer and fewer artists today that play inspired and raw. Her music speaks the truth and she puts all of herself into her songs.” – Marc Urselli, producer
